The Video and Audio Equipment that I Currently Use

The Canon 70D

At this point I'm using the Canon 70D as a second camera for my footage. I was using a Canon T3i when I first started making videos, but even though the quality of the footage was sufficient for high quality video, the T3i didn't come with an autofocus in video capability which is particularly useful in self-filming situations, or when you want to make sure the camera is steady while you are getting your subject into focus. Canon recently came out with the 80D which is great because now the 70D is a more cost efficient purchase. You can click the picture down below to find out the current cost on Amazon.

The Canon 5D Mark 4

The great part about the 70D is its autofocus capabilities. I can follow a subject in the shot without having to depend on eyeballing the focus nor do I have to worry about the camera shaking because of manually adjusting the focus with the focus ring. Of course, there are pieces of equipment that I could purchase to take care of that, but that would be more equipment that I would have to lug around. Of course, I'm willing to do so if that means that I can get a better shot, but in this case, the camera takes care of the focus on its own.

And so it also is with the Canon 5D Mark IV.

This camera is unbelievable with tracking moving subjects and keeping them in focus, which makes my job a heck of a lot easier. I chose to upgrade to the 5D because of its full frame sensor which allows for better more profound background blur, but also for increased low light performance in darker, run-and-gun situations. The shot also has a lot more detail due to the 30MP sensor.

The Lenses

Anyone who has been around cameras long enough-video or otherwise-knows that the camera is only half the picture-so to speak--when it comes to getting a good quality shot or video. First the videographer has to know how to adjust the settings in the camera to get the desired look, but each piece of a equipment will have its own strengths and limitations. During the filming of hundreds of videos, I learned what works and when, which is how I can produce high quality video for my clients. Here are three lenses that I'm currently using so that I can not only get more light in low light situations, but I can also enjoy that shallow depth of field (blurry background) that is so coveted by the film industry.

Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art Lens

This lens has to be my favourite. And on a crop sensor camera such as the 70D it appears very much like a 50mm lens would on a full frame camera. I've also found that this lens is a lot clearer and more crisp than some of the other lenses I've used. It's also a nice all purpose length so that I can still get shots in spaces that are a little more cramped.

Canon 50mm 1.4

This is a great lens to really get a background blurred effect and it is not as sharp as the Sigma so it's great for video and photography of the face where sometimes more detail isn't a good thing. I use this lens when I really want to zoom in on a subject without highlighting blotches and marks that will deter the viewers attention. The collage of background colors is quite dramatic and makes for beautiful video.

Canon 16-35mm 2.8 Wide Angle Zoom Lens

This is a lens that I bought for those situations in which I don't have a lot of room, but still want the versatility of the 35 mm. It's a very clear lens, but isn't quite the same as shooting with either of the prime lenses above. This lens lets in a lot of light with an aperture maximum of 2.8 and that's the primary reason why I went with this lens instead of the close relative to this one, the 16-35 mm Canon F 4 lens. The F 4 comes with image stabilization, which would've been useful for video shoots, but I opted for greater light, than stability as in most cases, there's more of a lack of light than stability, especially when I only use the lens at a 16 mm range. The more you use the zoom, the more stability issues will be a problem. The 2.8 opening of this lens also gives me a chance to obtain the depth of field blur effect that makes the subject stand out so well. I'd recommend this lens in cases where you want to get photos or videos of large surfaces, but don't have the room to back up to get the entire shot. If travelling to Italy, this would be a better lens to use for those indoor cathedral shots, rather than the Sigma 35mm that I took with me during my vacation there. This lens gives you a nice blend of depth of field, wide angle capability, and low light functionality.

The 70-200mm F 2.8 Zoom Lens

This is a lens I use for photography and videography. I think anyone who has purchased this lens loves it. Aside from the weight, I’d say it’s perfect in almost every way. Fast focus speeds coupled with absolute clarity make this lens one of my favorites. In photography circumstances it gives great reliability when it comes to focus and in video circumstances it gives me the extra range so that I can get closer to a subject when they are far away such as in stage or sports situations.

Picture
I’d say that this lens is a must in any photographer or videographer’s bag because of its reliability to get the shot along with the ability to do things that a prime lens cannot. At an event people are always moving and it helps to be able to zoom in or out quickly to get the right composition. It’s also great to be able to get an intimate shot of someone when they’re further away from you. This is especially useful at events where people do not want to be disturbed by a photographer budging into their conversations, but it is also useful in the studio where the subject can still enjoy some personal space while getting some great close up shots.
So if you need me to film someone on stage or at a distance, this is the lens I’ll be using to get that clear shot.

Sound Equipment

It's easy to overlook sound when making video. It doesn't matter how good your video looks if people can't understand what you're saying, or are annoyed by background noise or static. Here are the two mics I use for my shoots.
My first choice for anyone looking for a mic is the shotgun microphone, the Rode Video Mic PRO. This mic is great for getting good quality sound because it comes with an amp of its own. This way you can turn up the volume levels in the mic without having to do so in the camera (which causes a lot of the hissing sound). This is a mic I'd recommend for anyone looking to get good quality sound on any type of camera, but especially mirrorless or DSLR cameras.

BEST QUALITY SOUND

For those of you who are looking for the best possible quality sound, then you can't beat the the lavalier microphone, ESPECIALLY the wireless Sennheiser G3 microphone. This mic not only pics up great audio AND can be picked up at a 100 feet away from the camera, but it ALSO has a preamp in the microphone itself, once again allowing for you to get all of your audio from the mic, and NOT the camera's preamps. This enables you to turn down the sound in the camera while turning it up in the mic, therefore getting crystal clear sound instead of the hissing background noise associated with the internal mechanisms of the DSLR camera. If you're looking for the best sound, then I know you'll be ecstatic with what comes out of the Sennheiser microphone.
